Judge Richard Sankovitz is a distinguished former Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge. He left the bench after 22 years to become a full-time dispute resolution professional.
He won the respect of lawyers and litigants for his impartiality, his thorough preparation, his mastery of both law and procedure, his insightful understanding of the legal and factual issues in dispute and his emphasis on moving cases efficiently to the point where they could be resolved fairly. He takes pride in innovating and problem-solving.
His judicial service included two four-year assignments to the civil division and one in the family division. He presided in almost 300 jury trials. He is among the most experienced and highly regarded former members of the faculty of the state Judicial College. He has been recommended for appointment to the federal judiciary.
Prior to taking the bench, Judge Sankovitz was a shareholder in the law firm of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C. in Milwaukee, and before that an associate at Jenner & Block in Chicago. His practice concentrated in business and commercial litigation. He advocated for clients in state and federal court at both the trial and appellate levels. He litigated a wide variety of disputes on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants.
Judge Sankovitz completed two Advanced Mediation Training Courses in 2018. In 2019 he was voted the #1 Mediator in the Midwest by The National Law Journal in their 2019 Reader Rankings Survey, and in 2021 voted Best Mediator in the Wisconsin Law Journal Reader Rankings Survey. Both surveys were conducted online with lawyers throughout the Midwest.
Resolute Systems is pleased to announce that mediator Hon. Richard J. Sankovitz (ret.) will be speaking at the Milwaukee Bar Association Law & Technology Conference on Friday, November 19, 2021. Judge Sankovitz will be presenting on “Virtual Mediation Strategies.”
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Judge Sankovitz has successfully mediated myriad civil disputes including commercial, tax assessment, IP, insurance coverage, securities and domestic matters on virtual platforms. Nationally, Resolute Systems has observed no statistically significant variance in success rates between in-person and virtual mediation sessions.
While Judge Sankovitz is mediating in-person as well as virtually, video mediations (as well as hybrid video/in-person mediations) are now part of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) landscape. Judge Sankovitz will conduct an interactive discussion of tactics and strategies to consider in maximizing your effectiveness as a mediation advocate when you are communicating with your client and the mediator by video conference rather than in person.
Among the topics to be addressed are the strategic advantages and disadvantages of mediating by video, when the parties have a choice; how to make the best impression on the small screen; how to augment your advocacy with screen sharing; how to initiate virtual “hallway” conversations with the mediator or other parties; how to expedite client caucuses in real time; and precautions for protecting the confidentiality of communications.
Judge Sankovitz is a distinguished former Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge. He has been ranked “#1 Mediator in the Midwest” by The National Law Journal, and in 2021 voted Best Mediator in the Wisconsin Law Journal Reader Rankings Survey.
